Private health insurance

Healthy? You may be
paying for everyone else.

Private plans are priced on your own health. For healthy people who don't get big tax credits, they can cost far less than the Marketplace, often with a lower deductible and a PPO network.

How it works

You answer health questions when you apply. If you qualify, the insurer offers a rate based on your health and age. Healthy people often see lower premiums, lower deductibles and PPO networks compared with a similar Marketplace plan.

Who it fits

  • Healthy individuals and families
  • Households whose income is too high for meaningful Marketplace tax credits
  • Self-employed people and business owners who want a lower monthly cost
  • People who want a PPO network and can't find one on the Marketplace

What to know before you choose it

These are not ACA plans. They can decline an application, exclude pre-existing conditions, or limit certain benefits. That's exactly why I put them side by side with Marketplace plans and walk you through what's covered and what isn't before you decide.

Real example: Jon's family of five went from a $1,500-a-month Marketplace quote with a $15,000 deductible to a PPO with a $500 deductible for under $600 a month. Results depend on health, age and location.

I am a 40-year-old with a wife and three kids. Insurance has always felt like an unfair, overpriced, and miserable experience. After checking all the plans on the marketplace, the cheapest I could find was a $1,500 per month plan with a $15,000 deductible. Oran was able to get my family on a full PPO plan with a $500 deductible for under $600 per month.

Oran is the best health insurance guy, so kind and understanding. Our last insurance guy quoted us $900 for our family of 3 and I about died! Oran came in and cut the price in half for better coverage. I was shocked that was even an option! Oran is absolutely outstanding. I recommend him to anyone!

Oran is extremely helpful and is always there when I give him a call or text. Seems like he's on the clock 24/7. I would definitely recommend working with him.

Private health insurance questions

What is private health insurance?
A plan sold outside the ACA Marketplace that asks health questions when you apply (underwriting). Because the insurer knows your health, healthy people often get lower premiums, lower deductibles and PPO networks than a comparable Marketplace plan.
Who should consider a private plan?
Healthy individuals and families whose income is too high for a meaningful Marketplace tax credit, plus self-employed people and business owners who want a lower monthly cost or a PPO network.
Can a private plan turn me down?
Yes. Private underwritten plans can decline an application or exclude a pre-existing condition. If that happens, an ACA Marketplace plan will still accept you, which is why I compare both.
Are private plans ACA plans?
No. They don't have to cover all ten ACA essential benefits and don't qualify for Marketplace tax credits. I walk through exactly what is and isn't covered before you decide.
Can I buy a private plan any time of year?
Usually, yes. Most private plans can start on the first of any month, which makes them useful if you missed Open Enrollment and don't have a qualifying life event.
How much cheaper are they?
It varies with age, health and location. I've seen healthy families cut their premium in half and their deductible by thousands, and I've also seen cases where the Marketplace wins. A quick quote tells you which.

See what you'd qualify for.

A 20-minute call is usually enough to know if a private plan beats the Marketplace for you.
